Luca Salsi Retires Role of Amonasro in ‘Aida’

By Francisco Salazar

Luca Salsi has retired the role of Amonasro in “Aida.”

The baritone took to social media on Jan. 24 and said, “today will be the last performance of ‘Aida’ at Wiener Staatsoper. Today I will play Amonasro for the last time. What a great Theater and what an unsurpassed cast to bid farewell to this role!”

Salsi has performed the role various times at such theaters as the Metropolitan Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Royal Opera House, and the Arena di Verona.

As Amonasro, Salsi received raved reviews with critics stating, “Luca Salsi provided a technical masterclass in his arioso introduction, supporting his burnished voice to the full and effortlessly turning into a creamy passaggio.”

Salsi’s interpretation will be shown on ORF III alongside Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, and Elīna Garanča on Jan. 29, 2023.
