Thief steals work van with keys inside: Middleburg Heights Police Blotter

Stolen van: Rosbough Drive

Police went to the Sonesta motel at 5:19 a.m. Jan. 13 about a work van that had been stolen from the parking lot.

The victim said he had parked at the motel at 4:15 p.m. in the lot behind Perkins Restaurant. He said he woke up at about 4:40 a.m. and noticed that the van was gone at 5 a.m.

He said he had left a set of keys inside of it. Many work items were inside the van, including a laptop, phone and iPad.

The Flock system located the van at 4:44 a.m. at Bagley Road and Interstate 71.

Police listed the van as stolen. At 6:34 p.m. Jan. 14, Cleveland police recovered the van on the east side. It had interior damage -- the steering column had been peeled.

There was no mention of whether the work items were recovered.

Dangerous drugs: Bagley Road

Police at 4:07 p.m. Jan. 19 went to the Speedway gas station due to a man passed out behind the wheel of an SUV.

The caller turned the SUV’s engine off and placed the keys on top of the hood.

The driver was unresponsive at first. Police believed he may have overdosed. Paramedics arrived as police were talking with the man.

While escorting him out of the car, an officer saw a small plastic bag on his lap containing an unknown white substance. Police seized the bag.

The man received medical assistance and was transported to the hospital. The Detective Bureau received the report to test the drugs and determine possible charges.

Dangerous drugs: Smith Road

Police went to Rival’s Bar and Grille at 2:18 a.m. Jan. 13 regarding a suspicious person.

The bar owner saw a man standing in front of the building. Police arrived and found the man who matched the given description. He said he had been drinking at a friend’s house and had walked to that location to wait for a ride.

Police found that he had a warrant with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office for possessing dangerous drugs. He was handcuffed. The county agreed to accept him.

He was arrested and searched. An officer found a folded dollar bill with white powder in his wallet. It was confiscated. The suspect was transported to the county jail.

Disabled car: Pearl Road

Police at 10:25 a.m. Jan. 13 were dispatched to a disabled car near Sprague Road.

The car’s owner had a warrant and several charges for driving under suspension. The driver was the car’s owner. She was cited for driving under suspension.

The officer took the license plate off the car and sent it to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The car was pushed off the roadway.

Traffic offense: Bagley Road

An officer on patrol at 10:43 a.m. Jan. 21 checked a truck’s registration and found that it had expired in October. He stopped it as the truck turned in to the Speedway gas station.

The front seat passenger said he owned the truck and was unaware of the expired plate. The driver had an active theft warrant in Parma. The rear passenger had several active warrants. The driver and rear passenger were arrested.

An officer noticed that the validation sticker on the plate showed a different date than the expired date for the truck. The sticker belonged to a different vehicle and owner.

The truck was towed, and the driver was cited for not having a license.

Traffic offense: Interstate 71

An officer saw a car with dark-tinted windows drive onto I-71 at 1:48 a.m. Jan. 21. He stopped the car and told the driver the reason for the stop.

The driver was aware of the dark tint because he had been warned about it before.

The motorist said he did not have a driver’s license, but knew his license number. He also said he was on supervised release.

The passenger was not wearing her seatbelt.

The driver said he had marijuana in the car and handed the officer several baggies.

Other officers arrived at the scene. The officer went back to his cruiser and learned that the driver had an active warrant in Cleveland. He detained the driver, but Cleveland verified that the warrant was no longer good.

The driver was released and told to find a valid driver to take possession of the car.
