After a disappointing 2022 season, the Miami Hurricanes parted with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, the school announced in a press release Friday.

Gattis’ departure is the second change to Mario Cristobal’s staff after Miami ended its disappointing season with a 42-16 home loss to Pittsburgh in November. Former quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce departed to become the Appalachian State offensive coordinator earlier this month.

The Hurricanes, who went 5-7, missed bowl qualification for the first time since 2007.

Under Gattis, who won the 2021 Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach, the Hurricanes finished 97th nationally in scoring offense with 23.6 points per game. The Hurricanes were 88th in the country with 367.4 yards per game.

In 2021, Miami averaged 34.1 points per game, which was No. 23 in the country. The Hurricanes’ 448.8 yards per game was the 20th-best.

Pro Football Focus gave the Hurricanes an overall offensive score of 68.6, which ranked 93rd in the nation. Their passing score was 57.2 (111th nationally), their pass-blocking score was 67.6 (53rd nationally), their run-blocking grade was 50.7 (110th in the nation) and their receiving score was 70.1 (72nd in the nation).

However, Miami earned an 88.8 running grade, which was 27th in the country.

Miami’s most severe offensive drought came late in the season, as they failed to score a touchdown for more than nine quarters, culminating in a 45-3 loss to rival Florida State.

Gattis’ offense was hampered by injuries for the entire season. Starting offensive tackle Zion Nelson missed all but two games due to a knee injury. The offensive line became more battered throughout the season, as starters Justice Oluwaseun and Jalen Rivers suffered injuries that ended their campaigns, and others like starting center Jakai Clark missed time, too.

Crucially, starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke suffered a shoulder injury against Duke on Oct. 22, and the Hurricanes played redshirt freshman Jake Garcia and true freshman Jacurri Brown for most of the season’s final five games. Van Dyke tried to return against Florida State and again against Pittsburgh, but he aggravated the injury in both games.
