Biggest Recruiting Storylines Heading into 2023 National Signing Day

Brad Shepard

The early signing period has nearly killed the old February National Signing Day.

Remember all the hoopla, the whirlwind of decisions and the ranking flips of yesteryear? Those were fun times, but we're left with a shell of that drama now that the December signing session features most each class' talent.

Still, four of the top-100 prospects have yet to make their decisions, meaning there are still things to watch.

Additionally, while nobody is going to catch Alabama at the top of the rankings, some noteworthy movement could still occur in the top 10. The reigning-champion Georgia Bulldogs have some huge irons remaining in the fire, too.

While there hasn't been as much top-end coach movement as a season ago—something that led to tons of late-signing-session action—there are some new faces looking to add some big names.

Plenty of storylines remain open heading into signing day on February 1. Let's take a look at some things to watch.

Jaden Rashada Saga

Though he's not the highest-rated recruit left on the board, there's no question Jaden Rashada carries the most intrigue.

Everybody is wondering where the nation's top uncommitted quarterback is going to go.

It wasn't long ago that Rashada signed with the Florida Gators to the tune of a reported $13 million Name, Image and Likeness deal. But the deal fell through, and Rashada was released from his national letter of intent.

Now he's back on the market, and several teams are interested in the 6'4", 175-pound California native who is a 4-star prospect and the No. 80 overall player in the 247Sports Composite rankings but a 5-star in 247Sports.

Rashada took an official visit to TCU this past weekend, and 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong says Rashada has a "long-standing relationship" with new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. He also is coming off a visit to Arizona State, where he has a relationship with new coach Kenny Dillingham, who recruited him when he was offensive coordinator at Oregon.

Washington, California and Colorado also are in the mix, as it looks like Rashada is going to stay out West. It's still not certain when he's going to sign with a team, and since he's considered a transfer, the timeline doesn't have to be escalated.

However, with drop-add schedules, it would be beneficial for Rashada to make his pick sooner rather than later. It's certainly worth watching in the coming days.

Nyckoles Harbor Sweepstakes Shaping Up

The top uncommitted prospect on the board is probably the most exciting, unknown player in the entire 2023 class.

Nyckoles Harbor's potential is limitless. Not only is he big and athletic enough to play edge-rusher or linebacker at the next level, the 6'5", 225-pound top-ranked athlete in the nation and No. 17 overall player could also play tight end or receiver.

Oh yeah, he has the potential to be an Olympic sprinter, too.

So, where is a player of his incredible ilk going to wind up playing college football?

Right now, it looks like the finalists are Maryland, South Carolina, Michigan and Oregon with Colorado being out of the picture, according to Steve Wiltfong, who talked to Harbor's father, Azuka.

Right now, Harbor's recruitment is all over the place, and it's anyone's guess where he ends up. Pretty much everybody agrees he's going to play either defensive end or tight end, but that's essentially where the agreements end.

If you believe his lone Crystal Ball selection, he's going to shock the world and play in the SEC for Shane Beamer at South Carolina. Oregon has made a huge move, and Dan Lanning's recruiting acumen could pay huge dividends.

Harbor's mother seems to reportedly favor Michigan, and Maryland coach Mike Locksley has done a terrific job of keeping "local" players like Washington D.C.'s Harbor at home.

Really, it's a toss-up, and everybody should tune into this one.

How Will the Top Five Shake Out?

Todd Kirkland/Getty Images

Nobody is catching the Alabama Crimson Tide, whose star-studded class includes playmakers like edge rusher Keon Keeley, safety Caleb Downs and offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor among its embarrassment of riches.

After them, though, there could be some shake-ups.

The defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs look like they're firmly entrenched at No. 2, with the looming decisions of 5-star tight end Duce Robinson and 4-star tight end Walker Lyons potentially capable of boosting them higher.

Oklahoma recently offered 3-star athlete Taylor Heim, but it's unclear whether the Sooners will have the juice to pass rival Texas for third in the ratings. The Longhorns appear done with their '23 class.

With top-10 programs Tennessee, LSU and Ohio State likely done with high school recruiting this cycle, will any teams pile up enough players to jump them in the rankings? Is Miami done free-falling after Cormani McClain flipped to Colorado?

Again, there's so few remaining uncommitted prospects that it's hard to envision there being too much movement at the top, especially with the majority of national letters of intent already signed.

But the top of the charts could wind up seeing a little movement, even if it's only Georgia's class closing the gap a little on Alabama.

More Prime Possibilities

Every day, it seems, another elite prospect is interested in playing for coach Deion "Prime" Sanders at Colorado.

He's already made perhaps the biggest headlines of the late signing period by flipping 5-star top cornerback Cormani McClain from the Miami Hurricanes, marking the second successive season the NFL Hall of Fame cornerback has lured the top player at that position in his respective class.

Last year, of course, it was Travis Hunter. The No. 1 overall player in last year's class played his first season for Coach Prime at Jackson State and followed him to Boulder.

But just how high will Sanders' Buffaloes surge?

The coach made headlines when he told The Athletic's David Ubben that he has a 40-40-20 plan to rebuild Colorado, focusing on 40 percent graduate transfers, 40 percent undergraduate transfers and 20 percent high school recruits. But how will he apply that this year?

The Buffs have been extremely active (and impressive) in the transfer portal, and they are reportedly swinging in the Jaden Rashada sweepstakes, too. Sanders is trying for Alabama transfer linebacker Demouy Kennedy, who'd be reunited with former coach Charles Kelly.

While it doesn't appear Nyckoles Harbor is considering Colorado anymore, there are still several options in recruiting and in the portal as the Buffs try to rebuild the roster quickly. With the allure of playing for Prime, the names change every day.

Who Will Land Duce Robinson?

Tim Warner/Getty Images

Following Duce Robinson's big performance at last week's Polynesian Bowl in Hawai'i, everybody is wondering where the elite playmaker and No. 20 overall prospect is going to wind up.

Oregon and Texas are trying to land a huge punch by convincing the Arizona native to come to Eugene or Austin, respectively.

But the battle to land the nation's top-ranked tight end feels like a two-team race between the national-champion Georgia Bulldogs and Lincoln Riley's USC Trojans.

The two-sport star wants to play college baseball and football on the next level as well as professionally. But football looks like his calling card. He's a special talent who could be an immediate game-changer no matter where he goes.

If it's the Dawgs, he could follow in Brock Bowers' footsteps, though he'd be in a crowded tight end room that already includes a pair of 4-star signees. If it's USC, he almost certainly will get touches in '23, catching passes from Caleb Williams.

"The biggest thing is continuing to build that relationship," Robinson told 247Sports at the Polynesian Bowl. "It's going to come down to the place where I feel most comfortable, where I feel like I can be best developed and where I have the best relationships. Those are the biggest factors right now, just figuring out the place. … Now it's just about figuring out where the best fit is."

Georgia is the overwhelming favorite to land the 6'6", 225-pound pass-catcher in the Crystal Ball projections. If they get him, what an amazing close that would be for Kirby Smart's class.

Which New Coach is Going to Finish With the Best Class?

Michael Chang/Getty Images

No matter how hard Colorado coach Deion Sanders has charged and despite him dominating headlines with some "splash" commits, the new coach who has done perhaps the best job on the recruiting trail is Auburn's Hugh Freeze.

Currently, the Tigers have the No. 18-ranked class in the nation, and while Matt Rhule's Nebraska Cornhuskers (No. 23), Zach Arnett's Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 25), and Sanders' Buffaloes (No. 29) fall not far behind, Freeze appears to have the "best newcomer" category wrapped up, at least as far as rankings go.

Of course, he's selling much more recent history on the Plains than Coach Prime is in the Rockies, but after a stint at Liberty following his ouster at Ole Miss, Freeze is proving he hasn't forgotten how to recruit.

You have to remember Auburn's recruiting was middling at best under Bryan Harsin, but Freeze stepped in and flipped DE Keldric Faulk (Florida State), CB Kayin Lee (Ohio State), Sylvester Smith (Tennessee), Colton Hood (Michigan State) and Connor Lew (Miami) and then nabbed 3-star safety Tyler Scott.

He's also added some potential studs in the portal like former LSU linebacker DeMario Tolan and Kentucky defensive lineman Justin Rogers.

Sanders is dominating all the talk, and there's no question he's made Colorado a cool place to go, as evidenced by the Cormani McClain decision. But don't forget about Freeze or Rhule, who kept the Huskers' class together and added a pair of solid prospects in January, including Tennessee athlete Demitrius Bell—not to mention stellar portal hits.

Rodrick Pleasant's Possible Pac-12 Destination

Rodrick Pleasant is going to make a decision on national signing day, and it's going to be one of those old-school deals where fans tune in to his announcement.

Ah, the good ol' days.

The 5'11", 180-pound Gardena, California, speedster is likely going to play defensive back at the next level, and his list of suitors include Oregon, UCLA, Boston College, California, and USC. The Eagles' inclusion in that list is interesting, but the guess is he stays out West.

He's the No. 88-ranked overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings and the 10th-rated cornerback. His decision to sign is going to make some team very happy. So, who is it going to be?

The Under Armour All-American recently visited UCLA, but it was the Trojans who got his final official visit. The Oregon Ducks are pushing very hard here, too, and coach Dan Lanning normally does a great job of closing.

This one feels like it's going to be a battle between the top two recruiting programs in the (current) Pac-12, Oregon and USC. However, Chip Kelly's Bruins can't be discounted the way they're recruiting.

Pleasant is a plug-and-play guy who can make the starting lineup right away no matter where he goes.

Tracking Transfer Portal Options That Would Move the Needle

Recruiting has changed completely. Until the NCAA does something—or doesn't do anything—about the current recruiting schedule, things are going to really ramp up in December and taper off.

As mentioned, the high school recruiting cycle is a barren wasteland with a tumbleweed blowing through it right now, so even though this is a story about what storylines to watch before national signing day, you've always got to keep an eye on the transfer portal.

The first 45-day portal entry window ended on January 19, meaning, other than graduate transfers, players will have to wait until May 1 for another chance to leave their schools. Those already in the portal can continue to be recruited by other programs.

Who are some game-changing guys in there right now?

The top player in the portal right now, according to 247Sports, is former Ole Miss cornerback Davison Igbinosun, who was a starter as a true freshman last year and is heavily considering Tennessee, Michigan, UCLA, Ohio State and Texas A&M. Jaheim Singletary is a former 5-star from the '22 class who left Georgia after one year.

Former Washington 5-star quarterback prospect Sam Huard has yet to find a college home, and neither has former USC receiver Gary Bryant Jr.

Running back Asa Martin (Memphis), quarterback Chance Nolan (Oregon State) and defensive lineman Marquis Robinson (Auburn) are other potential quality portal guys.
