AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) - Pleasant temperatures will be short-lived moving into the final weekend of January. Frigid air is set to spill into the region Saturday night which will bring a prolonged cold snap for parts of the panhandles.
Highs on Saturday will be seasonal climbing into the middle 50s for many in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles but a powerful cold front will send temperatures into a free-fall Saturday night. Once the sun comes up Sunday morning, the entire High Plains will be in the teens and low 20s with north winds at 10-20 mph. This will bring wind chills in the single digits Sunday morning making for a bitter cold morning commute.
Temperatures will try to climb above freezing Sunday afternoon and many will get into the mid 30s but the northeast panhandles will likely stay at or below 32 degrees where cloud cover will be present. Cold air continues to flood the region Sunday night and morning lows on Monday will be in the single digits and low teens areawide. Winds from the northeast will be light but could still allow wind chills to tumble below zero degrees and get as low as -10 in the northern panhandles. This would fall under wind chill advisory criteria. Prolonged periods of being outside would be unpleasant if not dressed in layers.
The brunt of the cold air will be centered over the area on Monday and it is looking very likely that most if not the entire panhandles region will stay below freezing Monday afternoon with high temperatures in the 20s. Cold air will be slow to leave with Tuesday morning lows also bitter cold down to around 10 degrees and wind chills near zero.
While the cold temperatures are the main focus for next week, there are some signs that light snow flurries could be possible Monday night into the day Tuesday but accumulating snow looks to be under 1/4" meaning no impacts are expected. A secondary system could arrive later in the week but there is uncertainty on if this system will be strong enough to support winter precipitation.
