United Way of CNY freezes Vera House funding, citing concern about ‘ongoing serious issues’: The United Way of Central New York has frozen its funding for Vera House, citing worry about the upheaval at the domestic violence assistance organization. Sources said the decision to freeze roughly $200,000 was made in December, after staff and members of the Vera House Foundation board raised concerns about how the agency was being managed and asked for the agency’s board leaders and its interim executive director, Sheri Rodriguez, to step down.

State of the City: Walsh outlines plans for 2023: Mayor Ben Walsh on Thursday night presented what he called his plan for “next level growth” as he begins his sixth year in office in a city swept by conflicting crosscurrents -- anxiety over gun violence and optimism for economic growth. Syracuse’s bigfoot? Unraveling the decades-old myth of the city’s legendary “black panther”: In early September, 1945, a trio of boys burst into police headquarters with a breathless report. They’d seen a “great big black cat” in a tree at Elmwood Park. By the next day, “panther nerves” gripped the city; “PANTHER IN CITY!” proclaimed a headline.
