When officers got to the scene, they said they found a woman who had been shot.

The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead, according to police.

Shortly before 10 a.m., investigators cleared the scene.

CBS 17 spoke with neighbors who said they’re shocked to hear what happened.

Fred Cooley lives about four blocks away from the park and works across the street.

“I’ve been over here about 30 something years and that was the first incident of a killing in Duke Park that I can remember,” said Cooley. “The kids and everybody come over here to play. This is their hang out. Now they’re going to be scared to come to play in the park. It’s not fair to them.”

The Durham Police Department says this is still an active investigation.
