Thunder's Chet Holmgren Got 4 All-Star Votes Despite Not Playing With Foot Injury

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren has yet to play this season because of a foot injury, but four players still voted for him to be a starter in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

The Western Conference All-Star starters pool is made up of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokić and Zion Williamson.

The Thunder announced in August that Holmgren would miss the entire 2022-23 season with a Lisfranc injury in his right foot.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti said in a statement at the time:

"Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season. We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus. We expect that same tenacity will carry him through this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation."

Holmgren suffered the injury while playing in The CrawsOver Pro-Am in Seattle over the summer. He appeared to suffer the ailment while defending James one-on-one on a fast break after planting his foot awkwardly.

Before being sidelined, Holmgren suited up for the Thunder in both the Utah and Las Vegas Summer Leagues. He made a big impression in Salt Lake City, averaging 17.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.0 blocks.

The Thunder selected Holmgren No. 2 overall in the 2022 NBA draft out of Gonzaga, where he was a consensus All-American in his freshman season with the Bulldogs after averaging 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 3.7 blocks in 32 games while shooting 60.7 percent from the floor and 39.0 percent from deep.

There's little doubt Holmgren will be an All-Star once he finally makes his NBA debut for a young Thunder squad that also includes Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. For now, he'll be watching the game from the couch as he continues his recovery.
