OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office announced on their Facebook page that longtime public servant and former sheriff Tom Burgoyne passed away Thursday morning. He was 82.
Burgoyne was police chief of Ohio County from 2000-2008.
In the Facebook post, the department said Burgoyne, “Was instrumental in implementing countless upgrades and positive changes to the Department, and will be remembered as a distinguished leader.”
He spent a total of 39 years between his earlier work with the FBI and then the sheriff’s department.
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin issued a statement on Burgoyne’s death saying, “Gayle and I are heartbroken by the death of our dear friend Tom Burgoyne. A dedicated community leader, former Ohio County Sheriff, father and husband, Tom’s presence was felt by the entire Ohio County community. Tom spent his life giving back to his community and state.”
Burgoyne was awarded the “Good Samaritan” award in 2021.
