Tribe men earn close win against Stony Brook

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – Anders Nelson did about everything for William & Mary Thursday, including scoring six of its final seven points in holding off Stony Brook, 77-74 at Kaplan Arena.

Nelson scored a season-high 27 points for W&M (9-13, 4-5 CAA) in making all eight shots from the floor, and just missed on a perfect shooting night by going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, with his final two coming with 9.3 seconds left. The Seawolves missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Nelson scored 10 points in the first seven minutes of the game and had 16 by halftime. And when Stony Brook (7-14, 3-5 CAA) had cut a 19-point Tribe lead down to four at 70-66 four minutes into the second half, Nelson came through.

The Tribe led for all but 14 seconds of the game, and led by at least 10 points for more than 21 minutes, but Stony Brook held fast and battled.

William & Mary started hot, making 14 of its first 19 shots and going 8-of-9 from behind the arc. And while that blistering pace didn’t last, the Tribe still shot 57.4% for the game and 81.3% from behind the arc, which is a school record and the highest in Division I this season (13-of-16).

Stony Brook’s Tyler Stephenson-Moore was injured on a drive to the basket with 6:50 left in the game and had to be placed on a backboard and taken by ambulance to the hospital. The game was delayed for about 15 minutes.

The Tribe return to action Saturday at Towson (15-7, 7-2 CAA).
