It's a dangerous trend happening in our area: car accidents involving bicyclists.
Experts we spoke with Thursday tell us there may be things you can do to lessen your chances of being hit and becoming a part of the statistic.
The Dalton Police Department posted on Facebook saying that bicyclists fatalities went up 8% since last year.
And Chattanooga, a bike friendly city, saw two cyclist hit and runs in the last week.
"Obviously safety is the number one thing here, right. And bikes can be dangerous," says Erik Handcock with Outdoor Chattanooga.
A week earlier on Market Street a teenage boy was injured from another hit and run.
The driver, who later turned her self in, was charged in the crash.
Safety is the main concern for both vehicles and bicyclists.
We spoke to Handcock about the precautions people should take when getting on a bike.
"The biggest thing with bike safety on the streets is going to be visibility, you know, being seen out there. So making sure that you have the appropriate bike lights for the conditions you're riding and make sure that you're wearing the proper attire so that you can be seen," says Handcock.
Outdoor Chattanooga teaches classes on learning how to ride a bike and safety for everyone.
"We'll teach you how to ride a bike. And we do everything up to mountain bike classes. We do some street bike safety classes, bike commuting classes," says Handcock.
Adam McAnulty at Pedigo Bikes says there are current accessories you can add to your bike to be safer.
"The biggest thing that we try to promote is definitely safety. So bicycle helmets, mirrors, you know, anything that's going to help lights, anything that's going to make you more visible," says McAnulty.
The Chattanooga Police Department has a safe biking initiative laid out here.
It explains both motor vehicles and cyclists common violations, including failing to yield or obey traffic laws.
Knowing the laws are the most important part.

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads. With nearly 65% of those killed in hit and run accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.
"Bike lanes around Chattanooga are getting better, but we definitely need more accessible ways to get around the city, not just a handful of roads going north and south or maybe a few east and west. So building more bike lanes and having even some barriers that are going to intersect the biker from the traffic," says McAnulty.
