LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Firefighters were engaged with a massive fire at a two-story apartment building in the Westlake district.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department, the blaze broke out at around 5:15 p.m. at the apartment building located in the 2800 block of W. 7th Street.

Flames and billowing smoke could be seen escaping from the second floor of the building.

At 5:30 p.m., firefighters said that the fire had spread to the attic.

LAFD reported that the fire had been extinguished at 6:20 p.m.

A 45-year-old man was taken to a hospital from the scene with non-life-
threatening injuries, and Los Angeles Fire Department officials said he was
in police custody and being investigated for possible involvement in starting
the blaze.

Los Angeles Police Department officers reported that they had been dispatched to the area at around 3 p.m. for a disturbance call. They indicated that the suspect had refused to come out of the apartment unit and instead began lighting things on fire.

Firefighters successfully evacuated all other tenants of the building.
