HBO's post-apocalyptic stunner The Last of Us should return for a second season, as long as fans keep tuning in each week.

This belief arrives via Ellie star Bella Ramsey, who was asked by Jack Rafferty on BBC Sounds about the likelihood of a follow-up to this video game adaptation, which also features Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Anna Torv (Mindhunter).

"If people keep watching, I think [season 2] is pretty likely," replied Ramsey. "It's down to the guys at HBO. There's nothing confirmed yet so we'll have to wait and see."

The Last of Us is of course a two-game franchise – the second of which released to much fanfare three years ago – so there's plenty of material to take us past this initial nine-episode first season.

Going on to address the show's standing as a worldwide phenomenon, Ramsey also shared: "It's weirder seeing billboards [in Leicestershire] than it was in LA.

"I took my driving test the other day – which I failed – and during that I kept driving past the billboards, which was quite strange."

Meanwhile, the Catherine, Called Birdy actress confessed to now realising that video games "are so much richer" than she ever appreciated, "being a naïve, ignorant, non-gamer".

"It's really cool that video games can work in a cinematic medium. Maybe [The Last of Us] will form a blueprint for video game adaptations going forwards. It's such a good representation of how video games can be adapted in the right hands."

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
