How Kentuckians can prevent garage fires

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Garages are often used as extra storage space, but fire department personnel are emphasizing how dangerous that can be in some cases.

On Jan. 20, the Lexington Fire Department responded to reports of smoke coming from a garage on Ritchie Court. Thankfully, no one was injured, but fires in enclosed spaces like garages can get out of control quickly.

First responders said it’s not a safe idea to have a lot of different chords plugged into all of the garage outlets. Fires can also be prevented by moving flammable items like paints, gas, or oils to higher shelves or a shed if possible.

“If you have anything that’s flammable, you need to keep it up on a shelf, away from any type of electric outlets, things like that. You don’t want to overload your electric outlets out in your garage with a bunch of extension cords or multiple charging appliances. You want to make sure that you keep all that stuff to a minimum,” said Shane Burger of the Lexington Fire Department.

The Lexington Fire Department also offers a free smoke alarm program, where personnel will come to your house for anyone who lives in a fourplex or smaller in Fayette County. Monday through Friday between business hours, the fire department can be contacted at (859)-231-5662. They’ll come and install new smoke alarms that are all up to code.
