A Scranton Police Officer is facing up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to knowingly claiming more than $5,000 in compensation he did not earn.
Jeffrey J. Vaughn, 50, knowingly obtained funds for extra duty patrol shifts at low-income housing complexes in the Scranton area, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of PA.
Officials say he fraudulently claimed these funds for working shifts he didn't actually work between July 30, 2021, and April 22, 2022.
Vaughn acknowledged that the monetary loss attributable to his conduct was between $6,500 and $15,000 and that he abused a position of public trust, namely, that of a police patrol sergeant.
Vaughn also agreed to make restitution to the affected housing complexes in the amount of $11,243.
The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 10 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
