A Sheriff's Deputy, now a detective-sergeant, was the State's lead-off witness, one of as many as 200 who might be called before the case goes to the just-seated jury. Sergeant Daniel Greene described his first encounter with Murdaugh upon reaching the scene in June of 2021 at the sprawling hunting estate's dog kennel.

He says Murdaugh immediately began telling him about the boating accident that killed a family friend whose relatives have filed a lawsuit. Paul Murduagh was charged with boating under the influence, Murdaugh suggesting that the murder was a vendetta by her relatives.

The deputy also testified there was a shotgun leaning against Murdaugh's SUV. He told the sergeant he had gone to the house and brought it back to the scene fearing that whoever killed his wife and son might still be around. But it is now entered into evidence by prosecutors who appear to be close to calling it one of the murder weapons.
