Frank Lampard has broken his silence on Instagram after he was sacked by Everton earlier this week and returned to Merseyside on Thursday to say his goodbyes.

The Chelsea legend was sacked on Monday after a 2-0 defeat at West Ham – Everton’s 11th loss in their last 14 games in all competitions. 

On Thursday night, Lampard took to social media in which he admitted he was 'disappointed' that he couldn't achieve more at Goodison Park.

Lampard has taken to Instagram with a message alongside this picture to break his silence

Alongside a photo of him celebrating alongside Everton fans, he wrote: 'Coming in to Everton last year I knew we were in a tough moment and I will always be proud of the incredible work and support from everyone involved to keep the team in the Premier League last season. 

'Thanks to everybody that played their part as the whole club came together. I will never forget the incredible night against Palace that we shared. 

'I want to thank all Evertonians for the welcome that you gave to myself, my staff, and my family. It truly is a special club with a huge heart, and an incredible history. 

'I’m disappointed that we couldn’t achieve more together and wish all the players and everyone at Everton FC the very best for the future.'

Lampard was back on Merseyside on Thursday to bid farewell to those at the club and say his goodbyes.  

The former Chelsea and Derby boss was told his 357 day spell in charge had come to an end during a phone call with Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s major shareholder.

It was the inevitable conclusion following weeks in which he has been on the brink, with Marcelo Bielsa Everton's number one pick to take over the role despite his concerns that the team don't suit his style of play.

Bielsa was pictured arriving at Heathrow as he is set to step up talks with Everton, though Carlo Ancelotti's son Davide is an alternative option. 

Lampard was initially able to turn Everton's fortunes around after replacing Rafael Benitez as manager.

Everton produced a stunning comeback to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 last May to ensure their survival in the Premier League.

However, they are in another fight to avoid the drop and are 19th in the table - joint with bottom-of-the-league Southampton.
