Motorist sentenced to 5 years in prison after fatal DWI crash on Halloween

A judge sentenced a South Jersey man to five years in prison this week following his guilty plea in a fatal drunken driving crash.

Thomas J. McAlorum II, 33, of Delanco, pleaded guilty in November to a second-degree count of death by auto in an Oct. 31, 2020, crash that killed Clement Mitchell Jr., 75, of Pitman.

McAlorum was traveling on Delsea Drive in Washington Township in Gloucester County when his car crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Mitchell’s vehicle. Police found an open bottle of alcohol in McAlorum’s car and smelled alcohol on him as he was placed in an ambulance, according to court documents.

Witnesses told police he was driving erratically before the crash.

A plea deal reached with prosecutors included both the second-degree death by auto charge and the ticket for driving while intoxicated.

A judge sentenced McAlorum on Wednesday to five years in state prison with a requirement that he serve 85 percent of that time before he is eligible for parole.

At the time of the crash, McAlorum was on parole after serving more than six years in prison for a robbery conviction in Camden County. He was released from prison in January 2019.
