America’s long-range missiles cannot be seen in isolation from the sea- and air-based ones. Together, they are part of what is known as the “Nuclear Triad.” The theory is that if the U.S.’s nuclear capabilities are spread across more than one option, it is a greater deterrent to other countries with their own nuclear capabilities. One major threat to the world order is that the number of countries with long-range missiles is growing. North Korea recently tested its Hwasong-17, which is the most advanced long-range missile in its arsenal. Recent tests are not a true test of how far it can fly.
