Giants coach Brian Daboll will have to wait until three days before the Super Bowl to find out if he won the Associated Press’ NFL Coach of the Year award. He was named a finalist along with Jacksonville’s Doug Pederson and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday.
Daboll, however, did not have to wait to find out Thursday that he was the Pro Football Writers Association’s choice as its Coach of the Year winner after leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record in the regular season and a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round of the playoffs.

It was the Giants’ first trip to the postseason since 2016 and the team’s first playoff victory since 2011.
Earlier this week, Daboll was named the NFC Coach of the Year at the 53rd annual 101 Awards, a Kansas City-based organization formed after the AFL-NFL merger.
In Daboll’s first season as the Giants’ head coach, the team improved from 31st to 15th in points scored, 31st to 18th in overall offense and 24th to fourth in rushing yards. Quarterback Daniel Jones also had his best season, establishing career highs in completion percentage (67.2), passing yards (3,205), rushing yards (708) and passer rating (92.5). He also committed a career-low eight turnovers.

Daboll was the only rookie head coach to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs this season. He is the fourth Giants coach to win the PFWA Award, joining Bill Parcells (1986), Dan Reeves (1993) and Jim Fassel (1997). The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award will be announced on Feb. 9 at the NFL Honors ceremony in Phoenix.
