AKRON, Ohio – Akron resident and U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes will be the featured speaker for Akron Roundtable’s next event, which is scheduled for Feb. 3 at noon at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron.
Event tickets are $25, which includes lunch (vegetarian option available). Tickets can be purchased online until Feb. 2 at noon. Last-minute reservations can be made by calling 330-247-8682.
In 2022, Sykes became the first Black person to represent Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. Since taking office, Sykes has fought for economic opportunity, safer communities and affordable healthcare for Northeast Ohio residents, according to her Akron Roundtable biography.
Previously, Sykes served as the state representative for Ohio House District 34 for eight years. During her time in the Ohio House, she served in Democratic leadership for four years, including three years as House Minority Leader.
Sykes has received several awards for her advocacy work, including Emily’s List national Rising Star award, Legislator of the Year from the Ohio Minority Business Enterprise, the Champion for Children award from Summit County Children’s Services and 30 for the Future award from the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce. Sykes is also a life member of the NAACP, a member of her church and a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., according to her Akron Roundtable biography.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Kent State University and a Juris Doctor with a Certificate in Family Law and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Florida.
