Metal nets hold back crumbling hills in most cases but some will need a repair soon

MONTECITO, Calif. – Among the repair projects underway from the recent storm impacts will be to reinforce front country areas were there have been landslides.

In many areas, specially designed metal nets have been installed to hold the bluffs together where the dirt is known to crumble.

The design works in almost every case, except, as we saw this month, in extreme conditions.

One of these section of rubble in Montecito can be seen on Mountain Drive, but the net is still connected in several sections.

The area is near where a portion of the road gave out, too.

These nets hold the hillsides and they are not the same as the ring nets used in the canyons for keep debris from clogging as it moves downstream .

The repair projects are part of the millions of dollars in work the county has to do now.
