Police catch bike thief on riverbank; drunk driver blames police for his drunk-driving ways: Berea Police Blotter

BEREA, Ohio

Theft: East Bagley Road

A Brook Park boy, 15, was charged with receiving stolen property and obstructing official business at about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 19 after he stole a bicycle from outside Walgreens, 6 E. Bagley.

The victim reported the theft at the Berea police station. While he was still making the report, police spotted a bike matching the description provided by the victim on West Bridge Street near Giant Eagle.

Police ordered the boy on the bike to stop, but the boy kept riding, turning onto a Cleveland Metroparks trail. While searching along Valley Parkway, police found the bike abandoned on a multipurpose trail under the Henry Street bridge.

Police followed footprints leading from the bike to a riverbank and found the boy, along with another boy, 16, who had been riding his own bike. Police drove both boys home to their mothers.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: Beech Street

A Cincinnati man, 55, was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 18 for drunk driving.

Police saw the man’s Dodge Charger weaving southbound on Front Street near Emerson Drive. The man then accelerated to more than 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Police stopped the man’s car after he had turned east onto Bagley Road, then right onto Beech Street.

The man smelled like alcohol. He admitted to drinking two beers.

The man failed field sobriety tests. He called one officer a “disgusting human” and said his job was “to be a jackass.” The man also told police they had forced him to drink and drive.

Arrest warrant served: North Rocky River Drive

A Cleveland man, who was 40 at the time, was arrested at about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 21 after police learned that he was wanted in Brecksville and Lakewood.

The man was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Lancer heading north on North Rocky River Drive. The Lancer’s windows were too darkly tinted, so police stopped the vehicle on North Rocky River at Sheldon Road.

Police smelled marijuana in the Lancer. The driver admitted to smoking marijuana earlier and said the vehicle contained a small amount of marijuana.

Police noticed that the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, as required by law. They asked for his identification, which is how they found out he was wanted.

The driver handed police two small plastic bags of marijuana. Policer searched the vehicle and found an additional small plastic bag of marijuana.

Driving without a valid license: West Bagley Road

Police pulled over a GMC Yukon at about 11:15 p.m. Jan. 18 on West Bagley Road near Baker Street after checking the plate number and determining that the driver didn’t have a license.

The driver, a 50-year-old Cleveland man, was also wanted in Newburgh Heights.

Police smelled marijuana in the Yukon. The man admitted to smoking a marijuana cigar earlier, but said he no longer was carrying marijuana.

Police contacted Newburgh Heights police, who didn’t want the man taken into custody. Police gave the man a ticket for driving without a license and warned him about the marijuana.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: West Bagley Road

A Cleveland woman, 18, was arrested at about midnight Jan. 22 after police caught her driving drunk on West Bagley.

The woman failed to stop her Volkswagen Jetta completely on West Bagley at Berea Street. The Jetta swerved to the right and almost hit the curb. Then the woman made an illegal U-turn.

Police stopped the car on West Bagley near High Street.

The woman told police she was driving erratically because she had experienced a bad day at work. She said she had consumed an alcoholic drink about four hours earlier. She failed field sobriety tests.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: Sheldon Road

A Parma man, 26, was arrested at about 11 p.m. Jan. 22 for driving while intoxicated.

Police had pulled over the man’s Ford Escape because the vehicle’s headlights were off as it traveled east on Sheldon.

The man admitted drinking “a beer, that’s all” while at a friend’s house. He failed field sobriety tests.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: East Bridge Street

A Cleveland Heights woman, 36, was arrested at about 2 a.m. Jan. 20 after police saw her car weaving eastbound on East Bridge. The woman’s car also drifted left of center.

After stopping her car, police noticed that her eyes were red and glassy and that her speech was slurred .

The woman admitted to drinking earlier at Front St Social on Front Street in Berea. She failed field sobriety tests.
