Secretlab Desk

The Secretlab Magnus Pro series of desks are metal sit-stand desks that can function as the magnetic centerpiece of a full Secretlab ecosystem. Much like with the Titan Evo gaming chair, Secretlab seems dead set on using magnets to integrate optional accessories for the product, and there are tons to choose from.

Secretlab was kind enough to send one of just about every accessory currently available for the desk, so this review will briefly touch upon each one.

Regular or XL?

The Magnus Pro desk comes in two sizes: regular and XL. Secretlab provided the XL version for this review, and its dimensions are 70 inches (1770mm) wide by 31.5 inches (800mm) deep. The desk's height can go as low as 25.6 inches (650mm), and maxes out at 49.2 inches (1250mm) high.

The Regular version is 59.1 inches wide by 27.6 inches deep.

Assembly

Before we get into putting the desk together with all its attachments, I want to point out one small thing that Secretlab will hopefully pay attention to. The most common complaints you will find about Secretlab products all have to do with shipping issues. Ours was not immune to this.

Thankfully, the desk wasn’t damaged, but the box it arrived in worried me.

hole

The box had a huge hole punched in the middle and was covered in muddy footprints. The desk itself wasn’t damaged, but the condition of the box seems to be such a common problem that hopefully, Secretlab is doing something to address it.

The Magnus XL Pro comes in two large boxes with a few simple parts. The main box has a metal desktop, a cable tray with a cover, and a few small tools. The second box contains two motorized legs, table feet, a desk mat, and the power cable.

Assembly of the desk is extremely straightforward and surprisingly fast, considering how large it is. The manual suggests that assembly should only take fifteen minutes and require at least two people. In my experience, I would say a helping hand is necessary, especially with the XL, and fifteen minutes to assemble is accurate. Once all the pieces are together, it's as simple as plugging it in.

Magnus Pro Desk Features

When facing the desk, along the right-hand side is a touchscreen control panel. The control panel has a digital display of the desk height, and six buttons. Two of these buttons are up and down arrows that manually raise and lower the desk's height, while the other four are for saving preset heights.

The touchscreen display and buttons look great when lit up. Despite being a touchscreen rather than physical buttons, I haven’t had any issues with accidentally lowering or raising the desk when brushing past.

The power cord for the desk plugs neatly into the base of one of the motorized legs.

At the top of the same leg is another outlet situated inside the cable management tray that can be used for a power strip (not supplied).

open tray

This cable management tray is capped off by a hinged rear cover that can open and close to conceal all of the wires for your gaming setup elegantly. When the tray is covered, there is a roughly one-inch (25mm) gap between the back of the desk and the hinged cover that you can feed wires into.

cable tray gap

This cable tray is the first feature of a larger cable management system that Secretlab uses masterfully. While the tray is essentially just a trough at the back of the desk, its simplistic approach solves a problem that many other desks, sit-to-stand or otherwise, still struggle with.

Before moving on to the rest of the cable management system the Magnus Pro has, let's talk about the only accessory that included with the base package: the Magpad Desk Mat.

DSC09487

The Magpad is a desk mat that covers the entirety of the desk’s surface up to the cable tray in the back. There are a few different styles of Magpad available to choose from, mainly the classic black and stealth options or something with a branded logo from a gaming franchise or esports team.

Magnetic clamps hold down the Magpad on either side, and rolling it out for the first time to have it fit perfectly is extremely satisfying. If desk mats are the obvious upgrade from a mousepad, the Magpad takes that idea to its logical conclusion by just covering every inch in a mouse-friendly material. Personally, as a former mousepad user, I love the Magpad.

If you are looking at getting the most basic package for the Magnus XL Pro, this is it. This would be the end of the review. Everything we have covered thus far would run you about a thousand dollars, and there isn’t much else to say about it. It’s a sleek, minimalistic-looking sit-stand desk with a crazy amount of surface area. The cable management and Magpad ensure that the Magnus will keep its minimalistic appearance even after you’ve completed your gaming setup.

The Magnus Pro XL is an amazing desk, the only real hang-up is the price and how much you are willing to spend on all of its bells and whistles. But it's those bells and whistles that really make the Magnus Pro stand out from the competition, so for the rest of this review, we'll have a look at the full range and see which might be right for your gaming rig.

Since it’s Secretlab we're talking about here, four of the five accessories we’ll be covering use magnets.

Cable Management Add-Ons

Secretlab has a few different options for cable management accessories. If you’re a fan of utilizing the cable tray and keeping wires out of sight, they all serve a valuable purpose.

First up are the Cable Anchors. These are a catch-all solution for keeping cables in place that run along the surface of your desk. They have surprisingly strong magnets in their base so that they stick to any part of the desk.

anchors

I have been using a couple of them to feed the cord of my keyboard and mouse respectively into the cable tray, and the magnets are powerful enough that adjusting the placement of my keyboard or moving my mouse would never be enough to move them.

In addition to anchors, there are also Cable Sheaths. The Sheaths are much longer and designed to magnetically adhere to the legs of the desk for cables and wires that, for whatever reason, aren’t being fed into the cable tray.

The Sheaths blend in perfectly with the black metal of the desk legs and are nearly impossible to notice if you’re not looking for them. Adding a pack of Secretlab Cable Anchors and Sheaths adds another twenty-five dollars each to the total package.

Magnus Monitor Arms

Secretlab’s compatible monitor arms fit perfectly with the Magnus Pro. The base of the arm mount is a clamp mechanism that slides into the cable management tray to grab the back of the desk.

Not only does having your monitor suspended on the arm above any desk free up valuable surface space, it also looks neat. The way it further utilizes the cable tray space is also extremely satisfying.

arms

The Magnus Monitor Arms come in a single or double-arm variant and have two magnetic cable sheaths inside.

Feeding monitor cables through the arms that run seamlessly into the cable tray is great, and if I had to choose one accessory out of all of them, it would have to be these monitor arms. The Magnus Monitor Arm dual variant is a $250 upgrade.

MagRGB XL Light Strip

While the dual monitor arms are my pick for the best overall accessory, the MagRGB XL is a close second.

I guess I’m a sucker for RGB lights because this makes the whole desk look so cool. Again, utilizing the cable management tray and magnets, the strip is perfectly out of sight, hanging upside down inside the tray. The small gap in the tray is more than enough room for the colorful lights to spill through, and once it’s in full effect, it looks amazing.

The MagRGB XL is manufactured by Nanoleaf, so you'll need to use the Nanoleaf smart home app to control them. It costs an additional $89. While you should be able to use this with the Nanoleaf Razer Chroma Connect app, we didn't get a chance to test it.

Premium PC Mount

The Secretlab Premium PC Mount is the most intuitive PC mount I have had to install. I find this addition less necessary than the arms or RGB lighting because of how large Magnus Pro XL’s surface area is.

With the desk as big as it is, you could easily fit a PC on top and still have plenty of room to work with. However, it might be worth it if you’re willing to spend an extra $89 on a glorified shelf and want that extra desktop space or more clean looks.

Naturally, the PC Mount doesn’t use magnets, but instead takes advantage of the desk’s design by screwing into the underside.

Sliding your PC in and out of the mount is simple and feels secure. I’m a fan of mounting PCs for both aesthetic and practical reasons. If that appeals to you, you can’t go wrong with the Secretlab Premium PC Mount.

Headphone Hanger

The Secretlab Magnetic Headphone Hanger is easily the least impressive add-on, but that’s not to say it has no place on the Magnus Pro. It is precisely what it sounds like; a magnetic mount that you can place virtually anywhere on the underside of the desk to hang a pair of gaming headphones.

The magnet is strong, and the visual design of the mount matches the rest of the desk, so there is nothing to complain about. If you want your headphones to always be within arms reach of your gaming station, the Secretlab Magnetic Headphone Hanger costs $29.

The Ultimate Gaming Desk?

The Magnus Pro XL has everything you need and just about everything you could want from a dynamic work and gaming station. The XL in the title is well deserved, but despite its size remains easy to put together.

While the desk itself ticks all the boxes and more, it's once you start adding accessories that the SecretLab ecosystem really shines. For the tidiest, most aesthetically pleasing gaming desk ever, Secretlab has you covered.

The only point of consideration is the extravagant price. The basic package of Magnus Pro XL with the Magpad Desk Mat works out at around $1,000. With all of the accessories featured in this review, the total rises to $1,500. That's a big chunk of change—enough to buy a whole new gaming PC.

The Secretlab Magnus XL Pro and ecosystem of accessories is the best gaming kit you can get; it just comes at a premium.
