Big G’s In Winslow Was Once Forced To Change A Menu Item’s Name

If you were exposed to Maine sports in any way in the 1990s, there is a really good chance that you know that name Cindy Blodgett.

Blodgett was a basketball phenom in the early 1990s and she went on to be an extremely successful college basketball player in the mid and late 1990s.  She was really a household name here in Maine.  EVERYONE knew who she was and would probably recognize her if they spotted her on the street.

Over the course of her four years with the Lawrence Bulldogs, she led them to an 84 to 4 record.  Then, in college at University of Maine Orono, she was a four time Kodak All-American and she led UMO's basketball team to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

She went on to play in the WNBA.  After her time in the WNBA, she spent time as a college ball coach.

Back to the whole thing about Cindy Blodgett being extremely well known here in Maine.

Apparently, for a time back in 1996, Big G's in Winslow had a Cindy Blodgett sandwich.  According to an article in the Morning Sentinel, the hot turkey sandwich had swiss cheese, sprouts, and tomato.

Sadly, it did not stay on the menu long.  According to the December 31st, 1996 article in the Morning Sentinel, the sandwich was removed from the menu in October of 1996.  Well, sort of.  It was actually just renamed The Association.

The article explains that the deli has been contacted by the UMO ladies basketball coach to explain that they could not name the sandwich after the well known player.  Apparently, the NCAA has a rule that does not allow current collegiate athletes from being involved in commercial ventures.

Of course, that was A LONG TIME AGO.  At this point, the sandwich is on the menu.  As her time involved in the NCAA was decades ago, the well known deli has changed the name of The Association back to Cindy Blodgett.

Cindy Blodgett is not the only celeb (local and not-so-local) who has been honored with a menu item.  There is also a Governor King sandwich, a Richard Simmons, a Willy Nelson. there are sandwiches named for both Cher and Sonny Bono, and one named for local columnist JP Devine.
