One Massachusetts restaurant landed itself on the list of Yelp’s top 100 restaurants in the country for 2023.
Yelp put together this year’s most popular and highly rated restaurants, according to their users comments. Then, the site ranked each restaurant by total number of submissions, ratings, reviews and geographic representation, among other factors.
Here’s how the only restaurant in Massachusetts ranked.
Taqueria El Amigo in Waltham placed as the 84th best restaurant in the country, according to Yelp’s list.

The storefront is consistently rated among the state’s best Mexican restaurants, Yelp said, even landing on Yelp’s top 100 taco spots in America 2022.
Popular food items for Yelp users include corn tortillas filled with spicy al pastor and beef cheek. Yelp also cites the “lengthy menu” of tortas, quesadillas, burritos and enchiladas, plus breakfast burritos and plates that Yelp users enjoy.
“Being from California, these are the first tacos I’ve had here that truly compare,” said Yelp user Alexandra L.
“I zeroed in on the Tacos Especiales, which at $8.99 for 4 were an excellent deal. I was able to split mine between pastor and chorizo, both of which were simple, honest preparations featuring plenty of nicely prepared meat. A fast, filling meal,” Yelp user Vincent L. said.
Other Yelp users noted that despite the great food, customers should know the Waltham restaurant is cash only and has tight seating.
Taqueria el Amigo was the only Massachusetts restaurant to make Yelp’s list, but a few other New England spots ranked on the list as well.
Two Connecticut restaurants — Sandra’s Next Generation in New Haven and YiaYia’s Greek Kitchen in Torrington — ranked at 56 and 83.
Root in Newport, Rhode Island, placed at 59 and Silver Fork in Manchester, Vermont, just managed to make the top 100 list, coming in at 97.
