ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) - A woman died in a morning fire in Fairview Heights.

The St. Clair Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. told News 4 Nancy Perkins, 61, died in the fire while she was asleep in bed. She was wearing a medical bracelet that alerted Medstar Ambulance to respond.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of 1st Avenue. Responding officers saw flames from the west side of the building and couldn’t go in with the amount of fire and smoke.

The fire department said no one else was inside the residence at the time of the fire.

Josh Rosado, who lives across the street, described the Perkins family as kind and loving.

“We all know each other here,” he said. “We all say hi to each other.”

The American Red Cross is assisting the family with shelter after the home was left uninhabitable.

Investigators are working to find the cause of the fire.
