Chesapeake Bay sailing log canoes have their origins as oystermen’s boats but have also been raced competitively since the eve of the American Civil War and after more than a century and a half, the competition is as stiff as ever. Over the years, the spread of sail has grown and with them, the crews, delicately balanced over the side to keep the canoes upright. This illustrated lecture will show how these boats remain rooted in tradition despite decades of innovation to increase their speed and performance.

Join us for a reception to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition – AFTERMATH. The exhibition, located in the Martino Gallery, focuses on the healing power of art and community rising up following gun violence. Spearheading this exhibit is a collection of work entitled ‘The Capital Five: Honoring Our Heroes of the Press’. Adjacent, in the Chaney Gallery is a collection of artwork and creative installations by regional artists. Through a non-political lens, this work explores an overall community response and how it affects us in our everyday lives.

This is our elite fundraising and endurance Plunge option… plunging 24 times in 24 hours alongside fellow Super Plungers and our Special Olympic Maryland athletes. In a nutshell, it’s a really great time. Our Super Plunge team becomes a family leading up to the event and spending those 24 hours together really solidifies it. We plunge every hour on the hour and every plunge hour has a theme (you’ll get all those details as we get closer), we have a 24-hour DJ, lots of food, and a ton of fun.
BSO Presents Off the Cuff: Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Shostakovich’s transcendent Fifth Symphony uses the coded language of musical irony that was off limits in the repressive Soviet regime. St. John's College Spring Lecture Series: Parker Quartet Performs Beethoven

January 27, the Parker Quartet will perform Beethoven, String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95, Ligeti, Quartet No. 2 and Beethoven, Quartet in C# minor, Op. 131. Inspired performances and exceptional musicianship are hallmarks of the Boston-based, Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet, having appeared at the world’s most illustrious venues since its founding in 2002. The members of the Parker Quartet serve as Professors of the Practice and Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music.

Busch Annapolis Library Winter Film Series: Immigrant Stories

Maryland Hall Presents: Step Afrika!

Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities; traditional African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience. Performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding.

World Artists Experiences is presenting a Chinese New Year Celebration—the year of the Rabbit—in partnership with the Art Troupes in Virginia and Maryland and with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. The festival will begin with craft demonstrations in the Bowen Theatre from 5:15 PM to 6:15 PM. Crafts will include woodblock printing, red lantern making, dumpling making, and others. Chinese clothing will be presented by a group who will explain its symbolism. Performance of Chinese dances, music, and instruments from throughout China by Art Troupes from Virginia and Maryland will begin in the main auditorium from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Auditorium doors will be opened at 6:10 PM.

He’ll explore the Hamilton phenomenon to reveal what its success tells us about the marriage of history and show business.
From the Ground Up: An Archaeologist's Perspective on Native Chesapeake Foods

Join local archaeologist, TimeChef, and food historian Henry Ward for a culinary exploration of recipes that celebrate indigenous foods and native cuisine of the Chesapeake Bay region. Ward will share his unique perspective on these food items, and how his archaeological investigations inspired the development and preparation of the recipes.
