By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Gainesville saw a slight decrease in its unemployment rate in the final month of 2022.

According to the latest report from the Georgia Department of Labor released early Thursday morning, the rate dropped one-tenth of a percent from November to December down to 2.1%. That number is the same as the rate in December of 2021.

The labor force and number of employed residents grew in the city during the month as well. According to the state department, Gainesville ended December with 100,000 jobs.

The unemployment rate stayed steady in the larger Northeast Georgia area. The Georgia Mountain Region Commission, which includes most area counties, saw the rate stay unchanged from November to December at 2.4%. First-time claims for unemployment insurance actually rose over the month, with more than 170 people in the region filing first-time claims.

The Northeast Georgia Regional Commission, which includes Barrow and Jackson counties, saw a slight decrease in its unemployment rate, from 2.5% down to 2.4%.
