Opera Orlando has announced that it received an NEA Grant for an upcoming production of Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s “Frida.”

The company is set to showcase the work during the 2023-24 season.

“Opera Orlando has a commitment to presenting works that truly speak to our audience, said Opera Orlando’s general director Gabriel Preisser in an official press statement. “We have already been in talks with Casa de Mexico and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce about partnerships for and around this production, and I know that this work about the incredible Frida Kahlo will be one that our entire community can be a part of and enjoy.”

The company is one of 1,251 projects across the United States to receive $28.8 million funding from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of its first round of the fiscal year 2023 in the Grants for Arts Projects funding category.

Rodriguez’s “Frida” premiered in Philadelphia in 1991 and has since been performed at such companies as Houston Grand Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Florida Grand Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Atlanta Opera, Portland Opera, Anchorage Opera, and Michigan Opera Theater, among others.

Next up for Opera Orlando is a production of “The Daughter of the Regiment” in late April 2023.
