APS board moves forward with new student goals
Since last week the Albuquerque Public Schools board has been developing goals for student success over the next five years.
All of the goals are based on feedback from the community.
So far the goals are to improve third graders' reading proficiency, improve eighth graders math abilities, and to better prepare students for life after high school.
Superintendent Scott Elder proposed a fourth goal it suggests increasing the amount of kids that feel safe, engaged, valued and connected.
Board members acknowledged some of the goals are being put in place due to the 2018 Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit.
“Ultimately we have been held liable for not meeting the needs of our students and the goals. And we need to ensure that we do what we are supposed to do, do the right thing,” Crystal Tapia-Romero District 5.
The board approved a motion for the fourth goal to increase students skills and mindsets for student perseverance, self regulation and self efficacy and social awareness.
The board also outlined what they call guardrails measures to make sure students do not fall behind.
