Depleted Gophers Battle, But Fall Short to Indiana

1/25/2023 11:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Jamison Battle led Minnesota with 20 points, but RV/RV Indiana (14-6, 5-4 B1G) scored the game's final seven points to escape with a 61-57 win over a shorthanded Gophers squad Thursday night at Williams Arena. Minnesota (7-12, 1-8) was limited to seven players in the game, as the Gophers were without starting forward Dawson Garcia, center Pharrel Payne, and guard Braeden Carrington.

Battle scored the first five points of the game for the Gophers, who led 5-1 after his three-pointer at the 18:40 mark. After Indiana grabbed a 12-9 lead with 13:49 remaining, Minnesota responded with a 15-6 run keyed by five points from Jaden Henley for a 24-18 lead at the 6:00 mark. An 8-0 IU run put the Hoosiers back in the lead, and a late three-pointer gave the visitors a 33-30 edge at the break.

The Hoosiers stretched the lead to seven points, but a layup from Henley, a trifecta from Battle, and a jumper from Taurus Samuels tied the score at 47-47 midway through the half, and Battle added another three-pointer to reclaim a 50-49 lead with 8:55 left. Treyton Thompson tied the score at 52-52, and once again, a Battle three put the Gophers ahead by one, 55-54, with 6:22 remaining. A pair of free throws by Samuels gave the Gophers a 57-54 edge at the 3:20 mark, but Indiana closed the game on a 7-0 run to secure the victory.

Thompson finished with eight points and career-highs of eight rebounds and two blocked shots, while Ta'Lon Cooper had seven points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Samuels had seven points and tied his career-high with seven boards, and Henley added seven points and four rebounds.

Minnesota heads to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11:00 a.m. CDT on BTN.
