MONROE, Mich. — A recently-graduated high school student from Monroe, Michigan, died Wednesday morning after a car accident, Monroe Public Schools said in a statement.
Emma Treadway turned 18 in December and had just started a new job shortly after completing her graduation requirements at Orchard Center High School. She was set to walk the graduation stage in June.
Both of Treadway's parents are deceased -- her mother died six years ago due to cancer -- and her grandparents raised her and her siblings, according to a GoFundMe organized to support the family.
She was a highly motivated student who is "fondly remembered by the staff and students whose lives she touched" at MPS, where she spent her entire academic career. She previously attended Monroe High School, Monroe Middle School, Custer Elementary and Riverside Learning Center, MPS said.
"Emma will be missed by many. She was a force. She was a sister, daughter, granddaughter, aunt, niece, cousin, friend. We love you Emma Pearl!!" the GoFundMe says.
The GoFundMe has a goal of $10,000 and will support Treadway's family and help with funeral and living expenses as they will be missing work to grieve.
MPS is also asking for assistance from the school community: "The Baccarella Funeral Home (1201 S. Telegraph Rd, Monroe, Michigan) is accepting cash and check donations to help defray funeral expenses."
As the community grieves, counselors are available to MPS students and staff and can recommend community resources as well. The parents of students are also encouraged to talk to their children about the emotions they are experiencing as a result of the loss of one of their peers.
