A Milwaukee man told WISN 12 News he was shot trying to fight off an armed robber. It happened Saturday afternoon near North 91st Street and Custer Avenue.
From his hospital bed, Donald Jones said he was helping a friend sell sunglasses to a stranger. The former security guard said the three of them were in a car when that transaction turned violent.
"He had a Glock. He pointed it directly at me. He said, 'Run everything that you guys have,' or something like that," Jones recalled. "I just jumped in the back seat. I grabbed his wrist, and we're tussling for the gun, and as we're tussling, he tried to shoot me in the head, but it missed and went out the window, I believe."
The 30-year-old said that's when his friend grabbed Jones' gun and got out of the car.
"I think he shot into the car, and it hit (the suspect)," Jones said.
He said his friend also may have accidentally shot Jones, too.
Jones said he then tried to drive himself to the hospital before stopping just a couple of blocks away and calling for help.
Police arrested the 19-year-old suspect.
They also arrested Jones' 24-year-old friend.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office told 12 News it is still investigating and has not yet made a charging decision.
"I wouldn't encourage this to the public. Only because of my training, I choose to risk my life to help others," Jones said when asked why he chose to fight back. "He left empty-handed, and he's in police custody at the county jail, and he's where he belongs."
Jones is currently at Froedtert Hospital, recovering from the gunshot that went through his back into his abdomen.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Jones.
