SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating the death of a person who was found inside an old limestone kiln in north Salt Lake City.

Police received a report of a possible death Wednesday in the foothills above 1100 N. Beck Street. Officers used a drone and discovered the body, then hiked to the kiln and discovered that the person was dead, according to a statement from Salt Lake police.

Officers said they do not know how the person got into the kiln, but believe the person was homeless and living on the hillside.

"Based on the preliminary information, officers do not consider the death to be suspicious," the statement said.

Police have not said whether the person was a man or a woman and have released no identification pending notification of next of kin.

The Salt Lake Fire Heavy Rescue Team was called to help recover the body from the mountainside.
