GoldenEye 007, the classic James Bond video game that revolutionised split-screen multiplayer on consoles, has finally been given a release date for Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

Following leaks dating back years and an announcement trailer back in September, the N64 classic is being re-released this week, on Friday, January 27 to be exact.

Developers Rare confirmed the news in a tweet today (January 25), alongside some footage of the Xbox version.

The Xbox version will be available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles, running in widescreen up to 4K depending on what model you have. It'll be free to download and play for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, as well as a free update for the Rare Replay collection if you own it digitally (not physically, sadly).

Conveniently, Rare Replay is available to buy digitally from Amazon at the discounted price of £4.99 at the time of writing. Meanwhile, ShopTo is offering a deal on six months of Game Pass for £39.95, down from £47.99.

This isn't the remastered version that was created for Xbox 360 back in the late 2000s though, which recently leaked online. Fans had hoped for a graphics toggle, but it looks like the remaster has been outright cancelled.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch version is actually an emulated version of the original game, running in HD and widescreen. It's also got online multiplayer, which the Xbox version doesn't have.

This version will be available for free if you've subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.

It doesn't look like there will be options to outright purchase GoldenEye on either platform, which might be due to the game's infamously tangled licensing agreements. Still, it's less than two days until we get to run around those iconic maps and lie to our mates that we didn't know Oddjob was incredibly broken, and that's incredibly exciting news for gamers.
