CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – West Creek High boys’ basketball hosted Rossview High in an inner-city matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

After a tight first quarter, the Hawks were able to steadily build on their lead throughout the rest of the contest. Rossview kept West Creek at arm’s length to secure a 63–47 victory.

The Hawks’ defense paid dividends in the second half against the Coyotes, particularly by not letting West Creek get comfortable on the perimeter.

After giving up four threes in the first half, they only allowed two for the rest of the game. This was due to their ability to stay in front of their opponent. Without their ability to stretch the floor, the Coyotes struggled to find offensive production, which led to their demise down the stretch of the game.

Cam Ward led Rossview on the offensive end throughout the night. He finished the game with 22 total points. Ward started the game off on a strong note after scoring 12 points before the first half was over.

With the win, Rossview has now won nine consecutive games. During their win streak, in every single game played, they have won by double digits.

“Our platoon system is really wearing down teams,” said Rossview Head Coach Johnny Jackson. “I think when you’re only playing one half of a game, you’re hungry to keep getting more minutes. We’ve got guys who are hungry for more minutes; that means they’ll play hard, and if they don’t, they’ll come take a seat.

It’s sort of like practice; we’re keeping spots open for anyone who wants to play hard and do things the right way. I just think that our depth has really helped us increase the lead late in games,” said Jackson.

“Coming across the county to play West Creek, who’s been on a roll, I just feel like no one has ten guys who can come in and play like we do. As long as each group is playing hard, we’ll continue to utilize the depth that we have.”

Rossview moves to 17-4 on the season. Their next game will be a home game against Springfield High on Friday, Jan. 27. As for West Creek, after their loss, they moved to 14-7. The Coyotes are scheduled to face Clarksville High on Friday, Jan. 27.

Rossview High girls extend winning streak

Rossview High girls’ basketball walked out of opposing territory with a victory of their own on Tuesday night. The Lady Hawks competed against the Lady Coyotes and won big against their opponent by a score of 59-37.

Each team was fundamentally sound throughout the majority of the game. However, it was Rossview’s ability to create and execute their offense that really set them apart on the night.

Rossview guard Aubrey Padgett and forward Torri James really carried the offensive workload for the Hawks in the first half. Padgett started the night off with four three-pointers in the first quarter alone.

She went on to hit two more threes before the halftime buzzer sounded. Padgett finished the game with 23 points. As for James, she owned the paint in the second quarter of action.

The junior forward scored 14 out of the team’s 22 points in the second. When the game concluded, she finished with 20 points. Combined, Padgett and James outscored West Creek 43–37 all by themselves.

“The first half we really forced contested shots,” said Rossview Head Coach Clay Head. “We still have a long way to go defensively. But having Torri inside with her ability to block shots really allows us to get out on girls on the outside a bit more. We know if they get beat, she’ll be there to help out.”

Coming out of our Christmas break, we played some tough teams and lost a few close games. Getting back into rhythm has really played to our advantage during our winning streak. We’ve played some really good teams and won. It’s always good to win, but it’s more about us getting better,” Head said.

“I feel like, before tonight, we were really taking steps forward, so we need to continue to work and get better. Outside shooting was really nice to see tonight, though. We definitely have some capable shooters, but we’ve been struggling some from the outside. Not just Aubrey, but to see Madi Thomason being able to knock down a few threes. As we move forward, we’ll need that perimeter shooting.”

The Rossview girls’ basketball team moves their own winning streak to eight games and currently has a record of 17-4. Meanwhile, West Creek falls to 2-12 during the 2022–23 season.
