SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 95 northbound caused significant delays for drivers in Spotsylvania County.
Virginia State Police troopers were called to mile marker 116 near the Thornburg exit of I-95 North at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Three separate crashes involving 13 vehicles caused a serious disruption to traffic, according to police. Only one person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said that the initial crash — a sedan that spun out in the rain — caused a chain reaction of secondary crashes. Rain is believed to be the leading cause of the crashes.
At 3:30 p.m., VDOT reported that all northbound lanes had been closed and travelers were encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays. At 4:35 p.m., VDOT announced that the left lane on I-95 northbound had been reopened.
VDOT released their final update, announcing that all lanes had been reopened at 5:15 p.m.
