A mother and son are both dead following a head-on collision with another driver in Boca Raton Tuesday afternoon, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Daniel Polo, 36, was driving his 66-year old mother, Elizabeth Polo, eastbound on Glades Road approaching the Florida Turnpike entrance a little after 2 p.m. Tuesday when a westbound driver “failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway,” mounted the southbound median, crossed into eastbound traffic and collided with the Polos’ car front bumper to front bumper, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The other driver, Alexander Spandau, 29, sustained serious injuries.

Polo’s mother was pronounced dead on scene while both Polo and Spandau were transported to Delray Medical Center, where Polo was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“The only thing I can say is that the whole world is going to miss that wonderful soul of a person,” Chris Martinez, a former high school classmate of Polo’s, said in a text.

The two attended Spanish River High together, Martinez said.

“He was a real friend and brother to those that knew him … so was his mom,” Martinez said. “She was such a gentle and kind person the few times we met. God bless him and his family at this time.”
