A man shot to death by a police officer Sunday is being remembered by relatives as “the glue to our family.”

The family of Daniel E. Nevius Sr., 55, of Sicklerville, has created a fundraiser to help pay for his funeral expenses.

Police responded to a 911 call at a home on Fox Run Road in Deptford Township on Sunday afternoon and encountered Nevius, according to the state Attorney General’s office, which is investigating the incident.

Deptford Officer Luke Ivey fired his service weapon at 1:22 p.m., striking Nevius, authorities said. Emergency medical personnel responded, but Nevius was pronounced dead at the scene 33 minutes later.

Officials have not explained the reason for the 911 call or released any additional details about the interaction with Nevius and police.

A firearm was found near Nevius’ body, according to an initial investigation report obtained by NJ Advance Media through the state’s Open Public Records Act.

The type of weapon found was not disclosed, but the weapon used by the police officer is described as an M4 carbine.

Officials have not disclosed how many times Nevius was struck by gunfire. No other injuries were reported.

A family member created a GoFundMe drive to raise funds for Nevius’ funeral and described him as the kind of person who would do whatever he could to help others.

“He lived for helping others even when he could not help himself. He often would get himself in more trouble because he was trying to help others,” the poster stated. “He was the glue to our family. He would do anything for anyone and with no questions asked.”

The GoFundMe post describes several recent tragedies for the family.

“The reason we are reaching out for help is because he is one of many close family members we have lost in such a short period of time. Please help us send him off to heaven the way he deserved,” the post said.

The fund drive had raised around $250 toward a goal of $7,500 as of Wednesday morning.

The state Attorney General investigation of the shooting is continuing. The Attorney General’s office investigates all cases in which a person dies during an encounter with police.

Deptford Police are outfitted with body-worn cameras, but no video of the encounter with Nevius had been released as of Wednesday.
