Gophers Travel to Iowa City For Conference Clash With Hawkeyes

1/25/2023 9:22:00 AM | Gymnastics

MINNEAPOLIS – Six days after a victory in their Big Ten opener against Penn State, the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team will face off with the University of Iowa on Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. CT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The meet will be streamed on B1G+ and live stats can be found at the link above.

Last Time Out
The Nittany Lions came to Maturi Pavilion last Saturday for a 4:00 meeting with the Gophers, ending in a Minnesota victory by a score of 196.225 to 195.525.

Junior Mya Hooten earned Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week for her performance against Penn State, scoring 9.900 on vault, 9.925 on bars and 9.950 on floor. Fellow junior Gianna Gerdes once again acted as a steady force as an all-around competitor, ending the evening with a score of 39.250. That score includes a 9.850 on vault, a 9.825 on bars, a 9.800 on beam, and a 9.775 on floor.

Freshman Seria Johnson followed up her Big Ten Freshman of the Week-winning outing with another all-around effort, scoring 9.800 on vault, 9.850 on bars – her highest collegiate score in the event – 9.300 on beam, and 9.850 on floor.

Gophers in the Rankings
The Maroon and Gold rank No. 18 in the RoadToNationals rankings after week three. By event, the Gophers rank No. 18 on beam, No.13 on bars and No. 9 on floor.

Scouting Iowa
The Hawkeyes started the season ranked one spot below the Gophers in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, ranking fifth.

After three weeks of competition, Iowa has a record of 3-4 after competing against some high-end competition early in the year. On Jan. 7, the Hawkeyes traveled to Las Vegas for the Super 16, where they clashed with No. 8 California-Berkeley, No. 22 BYU and No. 24 Arizona State. The tough competition continued when they faced California-Berkeley once again, as well as No. 20 Pittsburgh and No. 26 Oregon State. Finally, in their most recent meet they went up against No. 10 Ohio State.

Like the Gophers, the Hawkeyes' strength so far this season has been on floor, as they rank No. 6 in the country after week three. Last week against the Buckeyes, no Hawkeye scored lower than 9.825, and the team score for the event was 49.375 (their highest team event score on Jan. 22).

Adeline Kenlin is currently 17th in the nation on floor, according to RoadToNationals, and teammate Maddie Diab follows her closely in the rankings at No. 19. Kenlin and JerQuavia Henderson have been anchors for Iowa thus far, competing in three events in each meet.

Head coach Larissa Libby enters the 2023 season as her 19th year at the helm of Hawkeyes women's gymnastics, marking her 23rd season with the team. Libby has led Iowa to 21 straight NCAA Regional appearances.
