A Georgia man is dead after a deputy shot and killed him during a traffic stop, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy initiated a traffic stop on Cook Road around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
51-year-old Billy Dewayne Couch failed to stop and sped away from the deputy, says GBI.
GCSO says Couch went to Pocket Road in Sugar Valley, GA and drove to the back of a home.
The deputy blocked the truck with the deputy’s patrol car and instructed Couch to show his hands, says GCSO.
GCSO says Couch got out of the car, and the deputy continued to give Couch verbal commands.
During the incident, the deputy shot Couch, says GBI.
Couch was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The GBI will complete an independent investigation and once complete, the case will be given to the Gordon County District Attorney’s Office for review.
