Two Californians are locked up in Wise County after being busted with a U-Haul trailer full of drugs.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin says one of his deputies pulled over a white Toyota Tacoma hauling the trailer on Highway 287 between Alvord and Decatur. Reports say a man behind the wheel was swerving from lane to lane.

Deputies separated the male and female passengers and they each gave two completely different stories. The driver said the woman was his grandmother and they were on their way to a funeral in southeast Texas. But the woman said he was her son and they were on their way to Tennessee.

The pair claimed the trailer was full of furniture but when Benni the police dog arrived, they opened the trailer and there was not a stick of furniture inside.

Inside police found more than 30 sealed moving boxes where more than a half-ton of drugs hidden inside. It turned out to be 800 pounds of marijuana, more than 240 pounds of candy bars infused with a hallucinogenic drug, and 1,100 THC vape cartridges. The illicit cargo was tallied to be worth $1.7 million.

Both driver and passenger were jailed.
