SUMNER COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal hunting accident involving a dog stepping on a rifle have identified the man who died as 30-year-old Joseph Austin Smith of Wichita, according to the Sumner County Sheriff.

Just after 9:30a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies responded to the area of 80th Street South and River Road after report of&nbsp; a man who was shot in the back, according to a media release from the sheriff.

Smith was in the front passenger seat of the pickup when a dog stepped on the rifle in the back seat.&nbsp; The rifle fired a round that struck Smith.

EMS responded within minutes of the 911 call and started CPR, according to the sheriff's office. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Wellington Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.
