Coronation Street has confirmed Alya Nazir will be stabbed in the show's extremism storyline.

The long-running, issue-based plot will reach its climax this week as extremist group member Blake tries to disrupt Councillor Maria Connor's meeting for the refugee drop-in centre.

Blake plans to live-stream his disruption of the event, even showing his followers that he is bringing a knife with him in scenes to air Wednesday (January 25).

When Max Turner tunes into the stream and sees what Blake is planning, he races to Speed Daal to try to stop his fellow former extremist group member.

As the guests rally round Alya to call for help, Gary and Daryan Zahawi hurry out into the street to battle with Blake over the knife.

Producer Iain Macleod said of this alarming story conclusion: "We are exploring a very 21st Century problem: teenagers self-radicalising through watching extreme content online. In the end, we wanted this to be a story about communication within families β€” what are the right and wrong ways to talk to younger family members who are gravitating towards extreme views?”

The ongoing storyline has seen teenager Max groomed into joining the extremist group by leader Griff, who'd pretended to be an eco-activist in order to gain Max's trust.

Spyder had also been a part of the group, though it was later revealed that he was actually working with the police undercover to bust Griff.

The next phase of the storyline will see Max coming to grips with being groomed, as he also faces a criminal charge of incitement to commit murder.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
