EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has praised his co-star Danielle Harold over her character Lola's cancer storyline.

Fans of the soap will know that Lola has been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, and has recently revealed the truth to her daughter.

Playing her on-again-off-again love interest and current fiancé Jay on the soap, Borthwick opened up about his co-star on tonight's (January 24) The One Show.

Speaking about Danielle's dedication to the role, Jamie said that going into work every day and portraying a character who is dying can be "gruelling" but that Danielle has been "fantastic".

"Danielle, I have to say, has been absolutely fantastic while we've been filming this stuff because it's really gruelling," Borthwick said.

"You're going into work crying all day every day and it can take its toll, but she's been absolutely fantastic," he added.

When discussing the importance of representing a terminal illness on screen, Jamie told hosts Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas that the storyline has "made a mark" with audiences.

"I think it's raised awareness about this, which, I think if you touch one person, if you do it for one person or one family that's good enough, but it feels like we're really making a mark with this storyline."

In upcoming scenes, Jay and Lola are supposed to tie the knot but some worrying symptoms give Lola cold feet.

When asked by host Lauren Laverne if the pair will make it down the aisle, the EastEnders actor teased fans saying it might be "on the rocks".

"We've had a long journey through the years, but they finally managed to look like it's all going to go ahead and then he pops the question and it's a bit of a rocky road this week with the wedding."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
