Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - Although it was his team's worst performance and loss of the 2022 season, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Tuesday it's important not to overreact to one game, while still keeping in mind they did not reach their end goal.
"You've got to step back. We're going to continue to do that as the week goes on," said Beane during his end-of-season press conference. "If a player didn't play his best game the other day, but he was a big part of why you got there, you don't throw him out. You've got to look at holistically how they played through the whole season. Some guys were playing really banged up and not the same looking player as we saw in September or October. You look at the whole thing, and you try to make the best evaluation you can, whether it's a young player, are they trending up? Is it a young player that ain't gonna make it? Is it an older player that's trending down? Or is it an older player that I think this guy can help us going forward? Those are all the questions that ultimately we've got to work through in the coming weeks."
Beane says the Bills offense started well this season, but didn't maintain that level of production.
"I think our offense was really playing well through the bye," Beane said. "For whatever reason, I think the second half of the season... it didn't all play out every week the way it started early in the season."
The Bills enter another pivotal offseason after, once again, falling in the Divisional Round of the AFC Playoffs. To keep some key free agents and be able to add more talent, they'll have to be creative again when it comes to the salary cap.
Beane says the Bills are currently in the $240 million range, as far as committed salaries to the cap, but the league-projected cap in 2023 will be somewhere in the $220-$230 million range, depending on numbers still being calculated.
Currently, the Bills have 21 players on the active roster who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in March, including safety Jordan Poyer and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
