Three Nebraska airports among national count with 2022 firearm discoveries
Transportation Security Administration officers in Nebraska found 17 firearms in travelers' carry-on luggage in 2022, contributing to the 6,542 firearms discovered at 262 airports across the country.
The previous record of firearms discovered by TSA was 5,972 in 2021.
"As a responsible gun owner, we really would like to know that people know where their gun is at all times and not they show up at the airport and claim they didn't realize they have it with them," TSA Spokesperson for Nebraska Patricia Mancha said.
In 2022, 15 guns were discovered at Eppley Airfield, one at Lincoln Airport and one at Chadron Municipal Airport.
In 2021, 23 firearms were discovered in Nebraska airports — that number decreased to 17 in 2022, while the national number increased by more than 600.
"We have over 6,0oo firearms or guns found in luggage across the country," Mancha said. "That's 6,000 too many; one is too many."
Passengers need to go to the airline ticket counter to declare a firearm, ammunition and any firearm parts. Before traveling, passengers are encouraged to check gun laws and regulations at their destination.
