A single vehicle accident in Toombs County may have claimed the life of a woman this week as she was performing her duties as a hospice Certified Nursing Assistant.

Around 3:13 Monday afternoon, Toombs County 911 Dispatch received a call about a single car accident on Cedar Crossing/Vidalia Road and J.P. Milligan Road in Uvalda. Toombs County Deputies arrived at the scene where they observed a blue Ford Fusion driven by Shalada Nelson, age 40, of Lyons, on the side of the road.  It appeared that Nelson’s car left the roadway and impacted with a tree. She was pronounced deceased at the scene when EMS arrived.

Witnesses told deputies that Nelson had called them and said she was having severe chest pains before the accident and was attempting to drive herself to the hospital.

Captain Jordan Kight of the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office says there is a possibility that Nelson may have had a medical issue that caused her to wreck her vehicle.

As is standard practice, the investigation has been turned over the Georgia State Patrol.

Jason Colbert is the CEO of Community Hospice where Nelson has worked for over 15 years and describes Nelson as “the epitome of humility, compassion, and love.”
