Food insecurity is an unfortunate problem that is prevalent but not limited to Western North Carolina. With the rising food costs across the nation, the Henderson County education foundation is resuming a fundraising event to ensure children do not go hungry.
It’s called “Food for Thought” and it’s been put on for the past six years for three main reasons.
The first is to generate more foot traffic to local restaurants. Reason number two is to bring more attention to the Henderson County Education Foundation that puts this event on. And, the last but most important reason is to raise money to support kids going through food insecurity outside of school with their “backpack programs”.
By dining in or taking out at participating restaurants during Food for Thought, residents can help raise money to support Henderson County Public School students
“If a child needs a snack to take home with them at the end of the day, they can stop by and get food," says HCEF Executive director Peggy Marshall. "We just want to take care of our children, our most vulnerable children and make sure no child goes hungry.”
Every child that attends a Henderson County Public School has access to these programs, no questions asked.
During the week of Jan. 20th-27th 2023, the public can visit any one of the participating restaurants and, using the provided envelope at each restaurant, simply make a $5 donation or more to the Henderson County Education Foundation. That donation envelope enters you into a drawing to win a $50 gift card to the restaurant where you are dining. All 26 participating restaurants have donated a $50 gift card to be used for the drawings.
The winners of the 26 gift cards will be drawn at the close of the Food for Thought event on Jan. 27th and all winners will be notified by phone and email.
